The South Coast Striders hiking group is offering its first-ever group trek to the top of Humbug Mt. in Curry County, south of Port Orford, on Sunday, Nov. 17, beginning at 10 a.m. Meet at the Humbug Mt. trailhead.
The group has avoided this hike both because it is unusually strenuous, beyond the ability of many hikers, and because there wasn’t a view from the top. But State Parks has now removed some trees to open up views north and south. And to solve the difficulty problem, there will be two hikes. The short hike won’t go up the mountain. Instead, it will pass through the campground, climb the trail to old Highway 101, and follow the old roadbed past some good views of Humbug, Redfish Rocks, and Port Orford. This shorter hike will be self-guided, but a detailed trail guide will be provided. The long hike will go to the top of the mountain, following the South Trail on the way up and the North Trail on the way down.
The Humbug Mt. trail head is found on Hwy 101 about six miles south of Port Orford.
