Gearing up for the final round of this winter’s King Tides Photo Project, which takes place Feb. 8-10, we’re holding a kickoff event on Thursday, Feb. 6, 6:30 p.m., at Rogue Brewer’s on the Bay (2320 OSU Dr.) in the South Beach area of Newport.  The event, taking place in the Boardroom, is free and open to all; food and drink available from the Rogue.

Our speaker will be Peter Ruggiero, a professor of geology and geophysics at Oregon State University and currently director of the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute based there.  His subject:  "Sea Level Rise in Oregon:  Projections, Impacts, and Adaptation."  Dr. Ruggiero specializes in studying coastal geomorphology and coastal hazards, such as his studies of the increased volumes of water washing Oregon’s beaches due to sea level rise and increased storm intensity and how this might shape beaches and dunes.

Ruggiero is a leader in the Coastal Futures Project: https://pnwcirc.org/tillamook-county-coastal-futures.  He and other scientists are working to model the effects of sea level rise on coastal communities (particularly in Tillamook County) and use this information to examine potential strategies to mitigate the effects.

Jesse Jones, CoastWatch’s volunteer coordinator, will describe the King Tides Project and the CoastWatch program.
