sand has risen several feet since December
Comments:
drop in sand observed in December is completely filled in. The Sunset Shack photographed in December is completely gone. It is hard to tell whether it was removed or washed away by winter storms.
Summary:
A busy spring day at the beach. Lots of people enjoying the resource in appropriate ways. It is interesting that there seems to be very little overlap between the groups that come in from Happy Camp and those that come from Oceanside. The north end of mine 280 is almost exactly midway between the two and that is where we see the fewest people. The driftline has fragments of shells, a few crab shells and lots of broken sand dollars. We are surprised by the lack of birds and evidence of other sea life.Winter storms seem to have brought back the sand that was missing in December. The high tide line clearly comes up to the base of the cliff. We are surprised and a little sad at the removal of the Sunset Shack. The dates inside went back 8-10 years with comments about good times, philosophic discussions and romantic evenings. We will keep watch to see if it is rebuilt this summer.

  • The sand has dropped below the erosion fence since our last visit
  • lots of tracks going up and down the sand slide to the top of the bluff
  • This is a substantial driftwood structure that appears to have been there a very long time. It includes signatures with dates, poetry on the walls, paper and pencils in sealable containers.
  • large rock dislodged from the cliff face
September 20, 2011 - dmurray096@aol.com
Beautiful September day at the beach with 33 people enjoying the sunshine. Most were fishing for crab just in front of the Happy Camp boat launch. Several were out-of-town visitors who have come back...
  • Small stream that flows down from the bluff and across the sand in a fairly direct line. Someone had added a driftwood "bridge" to walk across midway up the beach. The stream can be easily waded at most places.
  • Stand of iris growing at the base of the cliff just in front of the "Sunset Shack". This driftwood structure has been there for a very long time and is decorated inside with poetry, notes, and initials carved into the supports and ceiling logs.
